How to build a bar top.

When making a home or commercial bar top we always recommend using ¾” thick solid hardwood for the main bar top as it is more durable and longer lasting than a plywood top and can even be refinished. At Hardwoods Incorporated we make and sell solid hardwood bar top kits in a variety of wood species. Standard sizes available are ¾” thick x 16” or 21” wide x 6’, 8’ and 10’ lengths with custom configurations available by request. Bar top kits are designed to be installed over a quality plywood sub top and offset to accept the wood bar arm rest molding as shown below.

16 Inch Bar Top with Glass Rail

When making an L shaped or U shaped home bar top, the most common way to make the corner is to miter cut the bar top kits as shown below.

Bar Top Rail Edges

Another option for making a 90 degree corner is the offset or herringbone corner which is accomplished by alternating the planks instead of mitering which saves time and makes for a nice professional looking corner as shown below.

Bar Top Rail Edges

Whether you miter cut or offset your main bar top kit, our bar rail radius corners and matching straight sections will install easily either way while adding a comfortable custom look to your bar project.

Choosing the right bar rail molding for your bar is as important as the bar top itself. By any name; bar top rail, wood bar armrest molding, or Chicago style bar rail, it is the first thing you notice on any bar top and is the only part of the bar you really come in contact with. Whether building a small home bar out of walnut or a large commercial bar from hickory it is essential to have a bar rail molding that matches the size, scale and wood of your bar design. Consider building a bar from a figured domestic wood or an exotic hardwood and don’t limit yourself to one profile and a couple of wood species. Check out all your options and the seven different bar rail molding profiles available at Hardwoods Incorporated offered in a wide variety of domestic and exotic hardwoods.

Want to cut corners in a good way? Try adding a 6 inch or 12 inch bar rail radius corner to take the edge off. A curved bar rail will add a custom look while adding a much softer corner than the typical miter. Another advantage of using radius corners is they cut down the amount of straight bar rail required and all the cuts are straight. To make the installation of your bar rail as easy as possible, pick the bar rail and matching radius corner system that does NOT require any special shims or extra layers of plywood to complicate things saving you time and money.

Try Hardwoods Incorporated. We provide installation instructions, how to videos, bar top preparation instructions, templates and more on our website making installation very easy.

Nothing says custom made more than the addition of a curved bar rail molding made from a figured domestic or exotic hardwood. For more information on how to select a bar rail and radius corner for your home or commercial bar please contact us or call 1-844-BAR-RAIL

Custom orders of Chicago Bar Rail Molding.

We really enjoy making customized versions of our bar rail moldings and parts. We especially like making curved parts in wood species that can be a challenge to work with such as quartersawn oak and natural hickory. Pictured below are two such jobs we made recently for clients needing curved and matching straight rails for home bars under construction in Arizona and New York.

Craftsmen who have been there and done that are engineering better bar rail moldings, bar top parts, bar front parts and methods of installing and finishing them. Pictured below for example we demonstrate how to finish the end of a bar top and bar rail without the use of unsightly end caps. Natural edge slab bar tops

Natural edge bar tops are usually made from one solid piece of kiln dried wood with the natural edges of the log exposed on one or both sides of the bar top. In our shop, the slabs are planed, straight lined on one edge if needed and then sanded to final thickness. When several slabs are required to make a large bar top, wood slabs cut in a sequence are preferred and used when available.

Bar Parts

Because seasoned wood slabs usually have some of the bark still attached we take the time to carefully remove all the loose bark prior to sanding the natural edge, producing a smooth soft surface with a worn in look. The very ends of the slabs are also trimmed square if required. Once the slabs have been through our millwork shop they are ready to be crated and shipped to the customer. We also offer other milling services on bar top slabs  such as live edge relocation, cutting to length, jointing, and mitering.

Pictured below is a custom bar top milled in our shop using three sequence matched knotty pine slabs with natural edges. This bar top was finished 2″ in thickness by 27″ in width and measured 45 feet long made for a commercial bar project in Glen Burnie Maryland.
